Overview
The Global Payments Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) add-on extends the Global Payments extension to offer international customers the option to pay in their home currency. The payment gateway automatically detects the cardholder’s currency from the card BIN, calculates the equivalent amount at the live interbank rate, and presents both options on the checkout page before the customer confirms payment.
This is a separate add-on that installs alongside and is configured within the Global Payments extension. The Global Payments extension must be installed and active.
How It Works
When a customer reaches the payment step, the Global Payments gateway queries the DCC processor (Fexco or Euroconex) using the card’s BIN number to identify the card’s native currency. If it differs from the store currency, the checkout displays a “Pay in your own currency” block showing the converted amount and the applied exchange rate. The customer selects which currency to use before confirming. The chosen currency and exchange rate are stored against the order and are visible in the Admin order view.
Features
- Automatic currency detection — identifies the cardholder’s currency from the card BIN, no manual input required
- Live interbank rate — amount calculated using the real-time interbank exchange rate from the DCC processor
- Dual currency choice — customer sees both the store currency total and the converted home currency total, and chooses which to pay in
- Configurable block title — the “Pay in your own currency” section title is editable to match store branding
- Processor selection — choose between Fexco and Euroconex as the currency conversion processor
- Enable / disable toggle — DCC can be turned on or off from the Global Payments configuration section
- Order-level visibility — Admin order view records the currency used and the exchange rate applied
Use Case
International merchants — particularly those serving European markets — often face cart abandonment or post-purchase complaints from customers who see an unexpected FX conversion on their card statement. DCC eliminates that friction: the customer knows exactly what they will be charged in their own currency before they click Pay.
DCC is especially relevant for Irish and UK merchants serving EU customers, and for any store where a significant proportion of card-issuing banks are outside the store’s base currency. Global Payments supports DCC through established processor partnerships with Fexco and Euroconex — both operating under regulated DCC frameworks.
Benefits
- Reduces abandoned checkouts caused by FX uncertainty
- Customers accept the DCC rate at checkout, removing post-purchase disputes
- Exchange rate and currency choice recorded on every order for reconciliation
- No SSL or additional PCI scope beyond what Global Payments already requires
- Configured entirely within the existing Global Payments admin settings section
